Short Summary: Energy Efficient Design of Portable Wireless Systems

This paper discusses power consumption issues related to portable wireless systems. This proposes a combination of new power management and power control algorithms to trade off performance for power consumption at the system level in portable devices and this approach has finally resulted in a power saving around 53% for wireless cards.

This also discusses currently available approaches, such as, heuristic power management policy implemented in most operating systems, which is a timeout policy and their deficiencies.

Paper talks about power management under two sections Wireless Card Model and User Model and also introduces the renewal theory model. This is very well explained with some graphical representations.

A feature of this paper is that its presentation is very well structured and explained in a comprehensive manner. But it has only put less weight on presenting results in an easy to understand manner. Which is some thing, could have been improved.
