Had a chance to go through the ‘ID’ musical program telecasted on Rupavahini [National TV], yesterday. This is the first time I watch the show and two groups Centigrade and R&L participated. Both are very young and talented groups became popular recently. Most of the callers to the program had one question in common. Why the new generation has failed to do songs which can exist in people’s mind for years?
Very relevant question. The songs which were in seventies and eighties are still popular. People do love them. Amaradeva, Nanda Malini, Sunil Edirisinghe,Victor, TM, Clarence, Jothipala and many more from the past have done songs where even small kids today love to hear. So, what has happened to the new generation? Is it a question about their talent? No, Certainly not. According to the Romesh & Lakshan from R&L – it’s the competition in today’s music world. When someone does a good song another do a better one – so people forget the first.

But… I don’t agree. This is not a strong reason. Even in this competitive music world there are many new songs done by Sunil Edirisinghe, Amarasiri Peries and many talented musicians being appreciated by thousands of people and they are in their hearts forever. [Even right now at the moment I do this writing I hear the song ‘Maha wessak bimata hela…’ – by Sunil Edirisinghe from the background.]
My idea is that, the new generation goes after melodies and gives a very low value to lyrics. They start with a nice melody and try to fill words to it. It’s true – a good song must have a nice melody – but it also must have meaningful words. No matter how your melody is ear-pleasing, people will forget the entire thing if lyrics are meaningless.
