Technology awareness of media personnel

The luxury hotel Fortress was declared open by the president today, in Galle. This was one of the news items in Rupavahini(National TV) news telecasted at 8.00 PM today. The hotel which spreads over 4.5 acres of land also offers the WiFi connectivity - so anyone can easily be connected to the internet from anywhere in the hotel premises.

Wi-Fi is short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc. The news editor of the Rupavahini news has taken this as Wi-Five(or y5) and translated into Sinhalese as "y paha" technology ["paha" is the Sinhalase word for five in English]. This is nothing to laugh - but something to think about.
