Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Removal

This came as a windows update and installed in my machine without any serious notice at all. But the first time I restarted - I got to know how annoying to have this... it always pops up and says 'You might be a victim of a Windows pirate copy...' - cannot exactly recall, but something very similar to that.

First I looked to uninstall the windows update on this - but failed - it cannot be removed. Then a Google search - this worked. Following are the step to get rid of this headache...

1. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32
2. Locate "WgaLogon.dll" and rename it to "WgaLogon.dll.bak"
3. Create a text file inside C:\Windows\system32 and name it as "WgaLogon.dll"

That was the easy part... to make the following happen you need to be super quick -otherwise create your own program to do so...

4. Open your task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) & stop the process WgaTray
5. Delete C:\Windows\system32\WgaTray.exe [ this should be within 5 secs from the step 4 ]
6. Reboot

  1. You are using pirate software and you teach others how to use them... that's totally unethical. As some one in the software development field, you ought to have more responsibility towards the community you are in.
